About the VAT calculator
Shops in the Gulf quote prices both with and without VAT, and the sums are easy to get wrong when you do them in your head. This calculator adds VAT to a net price, or strips it out of a VAT-inclusive price, using the standard rate for the UAE (5%) or Saudi Arabia (15%), or any rate you enter.
How to use it
- Pick the country, or choose a custom rate if you sell somewhere else.
- Choose Add VAT if you have a price before tax, or Remove VAT if your price already includes it.
- Type the amount. The net amount, the VAT and the total update straight away.
Tips for shop owners
- Removing VAT is not subtracting 5%. A VAT-inclusive price is the net price multiplied by 1.05, so the VAT is 1/21 of the total in the UAE, not 5% of it. The calculator divides correctly.
- Check the rate that applies. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt. Confirm the treatment of your products with the tax authority or your accountant before you invoice.
- Round per invoice, not per item. Rounding VAT on every line can leave a few fils out against the invoice total. Calculate the VAT on the invoice total where your rules allow it.
